Banco República del Uruguay
In 2010, the Banco República held a competition to expand its present headquarters. Located across from the port of Montevideo, in a highly visible but deteriorated part of the city, the bank is one of the first things travelers see when they disembark from the cruise ships that stop in Uruguay or the hydrofoils that regularly arrive from Buenos Aires. The bank expansion was to be located on an open lot which contains archeological remains, part of an old munitions building that dates from colonial times.
Our project extended the existing building into the adjacent empty lot, hovering over the archeological remains and generating a public space beneath the addition. This space was to be populated by shops and restaurants. The covered open space not only preserved the historical value of the site; it presented a new and better face, a much-needed welcoming gesture to travelers and tourists arriving at the port.
